73 Million People Took the Free Health Check, Nearly 1 Million Found to Have Diabetes
By 31 July 2026, about 73 million people had joined the Free Health Check (CKG) program. The results are an important reminder: about 992,000 people were found to have diabetes and about 1.9 million had prediabetes. About 11 million participants were also obese, one of the main risk factors for diabetes.
The 2026 rechecks also found 188,000 new diabetes cases among 8.3 million participants who were checked again. In other words, a good result last year does not guarantee the same result this year.
Maria Endang Sumiwi, Director General of Primary and Community Health at the Ministry of Health, warned that diabetes combined with high cholesterol carries a serious risk. She also noted that deaths from chronic disease are shifting to younger ages, between 35 and 60.
Sugary Drinks: The Enemy in Your Glass
According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) 2024, Indonesia has about 20.4 million people with diabetes, the fifth highest in the world. Sugary drinks are in the spotlight: one study found that more than 75% of urban teenagers drink sweetened beverages at least three times a week. The government is also studying a "high sugar" warning label for packaged drinks.
Steps to Prevent and Control Blood Sugar
- Join CKG every year even if you feel healthy, because diabetes often has no early symptoms.
- Limit sugary drinks and check the sugar content on labels.
- Eat more vegetables, protein, and fiber; cut back on refined carbohydrates.
- Keep a healthy weight and stay active.
- If you have been diagnosed, take your medicine and see your doctor as advised.
