1 in 5 Young Indonesians Has Hypertension: Don't Wait for Symptoms
Hypertension is often seen as an older person's disease. In fact, according to the Indonesian Health Survey, about 1 in 5 young Indonesians has high blood pressure. Prevalence is about 13% among 18 to 24 year olds and rises to about 20% among 25 to 34 year olds.
Internal medicine specialist dr. Sukamto Koesnoe, Sp.PD-KAI, says he increasingly sees patients aged 25 to 35 with high blood pressure. Many of them feel healthy and only seek care after a stroke or heart attack.
Findings from the 2026 Free Health Check
The Free Health Check (CKG) program supports this picture. Of 9.2 million participants whose blood pressure was normal last year, about 1 million now have hypertension. The good news: of 2.4 million people with hypertension who were rechecked, 1.1 million brought their blood pressure back to the normal range.
"Don't wait until symptoms or complications appear," said Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin.
